LAS CRUCES GREEN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AND SOUTH CENTRAL SOLID WASTE AUTHORITY ANNOUNCES THE 2018 SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS RECOGNITION PROGRAM
LAS CRUCES—The Las Cruces Green Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the South Central Solid Waste Authority, announce the open application period for the 2018 Sustainable Business Recognition Program.
The Sustainable Business Recognition Program, launched on November 15th (American Recycles Day), is open to all local businesses in Las Cruces to self-report their efforts to recycle, reuse, conserve resources, and keep money in the local economy. The purpose of the program is to learn how businesses are implementing policies, programs, and initiatives that help them operate in a manner that is good for the environment and profits, while supporting other local businesses.
“Last year, 14 businesses completed the application process, varying in size from a sole proprietor to multiple employees, representing several different types of businesses,” says Carrie Hamblen, CEO/President of the Las Cruces Green Chamber. “Upon reviewing their applications, myself and the Green Committee were incredibly impressed with the various ways our local businesses are implementing green practices,” Hamblen added.
Businesses are asked to report on how much they recycle or compost, what recycled materials they purchase, the use of any “green” or renewable products, energy and water conservation efforts, if there are visible “green” policies or teams in the workplace, and what products they purchase from other local businesses.
Green Chamber Board member and head of the Green Committee, Mary Canavan, says “We are looking forward to seeing the different, creative ways our local businesses are reducing their carbon footprint. The great thing about this program is that we have the opportunity to share with the business community ways to implement green policies that are right for them, ultimately reducing their overhead and increasing their profits.”
The Sustainable Business Recognition Program is the kick off to upcoming “Go Green to Make Green” workshops, with a schedule to be finalized by January.
